Guidelines for Abstract Submission
Supporting Original
Studies
These are major clinical or basic science research studies
with high impact and broad general interest in veterinary
dermatology, which match the six themes of the Congress:
- Skin biology
- Immunology/Allergy
- Infectious diseases
- Therapy
- Parasitology
- Otology
Authors of Supporting Original Studies must submit a short
(500-word maximum) abstract of their study to the programmeme
Committee ¡V see the Submission Procedure and Guidelines below.
The presenting author of selected Supporting Original
Studies will receive complimentary full registration to WCVD6,
economy return air travel between their home city and Hong
Kong, US$100 for incidental expenses, and hotel accommodation
at the congress. Please note these benefits are provided to
the presenting author only.
Abstracts selected for presentation as a Supporting Original
Study will be published (in abstract form) in the Scientific
Proceedings of the congress which will be produced as a supplement
of the journal Veterinary Dermatology printed at
the time of the Congress. At the Congress, presenting authors
of Supporting Original Studies will present their work in
a lecture of approximately 20 minutes duration during the
plenary sessions of each congress theme. The Committee also
requests that Supporting Original Study speakers be prepared
to present up to 2 hours of continuing education lectures
on topics with which they are familiar.
In addition, a full scientific manuscript (4,000-7,500 words
or 15-30 double-spaced pages) of publication quality will
be required by 1st September 2008.
Authors will be submitting these manuscripts to the journal
Veterinary Dermatology to undergo the peer review
and editing process and, if accepted, the manuscript will
be published together with other WCVD6 manuscripts in the
journal. Thus, manuscripts will be fully citable in a journal
which holds a high impact factor in the category of veterinary
medicine. Authors should be aware that manuscript submissions
will undergo a stringent review process and will be accepted
only if they meet the normal standards of the journal.
Abstracts submitted for a Supporting Original Study that
are not selected for presentation may, at the author's request,
be reconsidered for presentation as a Free Communication or
Poster. In this case, authors will be asked to resubmit a
shortened abstract (250-word maximum) by the deadline for
Free Communications and Posters (31st January 2008).
Free Communications
and Posters
These are clinical or basic science research studies on any
theme of more limited scope, or of interest to a potentially
narrower audience.
Authors of Free Communications and Posters must submit a
short (250-word maximum) abstract of their study to the programmeme
Committee ¡V see the Submission Procedure and Guidelines below.
Authors of Free Communications and Posters may request a preference
for presentation format (i.e. oral [free communication] or
poster presentation) at the time of submission. The final
decision as to whether an abstract is presented orally or
as a poster lies with the programmeme Committee; the Committee
cannot guarantee that the author's first choice of presentation
format will be available due to time and space constraints.
The Congress regrets it is unable to provide financial
support or travel expenses to authors of Free Communications
or Posters.
Abstracts selected for presentation as a Free Communication
or Poster will be published (in abstract form) in the Scientific
Proceedings of the congress which will be produced as a supplement
of the journal Veterinary Dermatology printed at
the time of the congress. Free Communications are oral presentations
of approximately 12 minutes in length. No oral presentation
is made for Posters, but authors will be expected to attend
their poster for a short assigned time period during the Congress
to facilitate discussion with other delegates. A full manuscript
of the abstract is NOT required for Free Communications or
Posters.
Procedure for Abstract
Submission
1. |
Authors must submit
abstracts online. Please note that only electronic submissions
will be accepted. Authors who do not have Internet access
for abstract submission should contact the Congress
Secretariat
|
2. |
Authors are asked to follow the
3-step process for abstract submission:
Author sign-up (to obtain a login name and password)
Enter abstract
Finalize and submit abstract
|
3. |
Author Sign-up.
Before submitting an abstract, authors must first sign-up
and create an author profile via the online system by
submitting routine identification information (name,
address, telephone number, etc). Authors will then be
provided with a unique login name and password by email.
Please note that authors are NOT registering as delegates
to the congress in this process.
|
4. |
Enter Abstract.
When authors are ready to enter their abstracts, they
can login and follow the instructions to enter all the
details of the abstract (abstract title, author names,
author affiliations, abstract content, funding sources,
completion of Disclosure Statement,
etc). The submitted material may be revised and changed
at any time or multiple times prior to the final submission
via the online system. Authors will receive email acknowledgement
of that their abstract has been received and saved.
|
| 5. |
The primary author is required to complete and submit
the Disclosure Statement that is presented online during
the abstract submission process. Please note that no
abstract will be considered without completion and electronic
submission of this Disclosure Statement, even if there
are no disclosures to be made. Examples of what to disclose
include:
- Employment or consultancy for a company
- Ownership (significant stock options) in a company
- Membership on Board of Directors or Advisory Committee/Council
of a company
- Funding source for the study.
|
6. |
Finalize and Submit Abstract.
Once authors are satisfied with their completed abstract,
they must finalize and submit the abstract via the online
system before it will be considered for presentation.
Final submission will be acknowledged by email to the
author. Please note that authors will NOT be able to
change the abstract once this step is completed.
|
7. |
Revisions and Withdrawals.
Submitted abstracts must be complete and are regarded
as final. Revisions may only be initiated by the programmeme
Committee. Abstracts may be withdrawn until 1
st May 2008 by email
notification. No withdrawals are possible after this
date. Abstracts may have minor editing performed by
the programmeme and Publications Committees and authors
will not always have an opportunity to review such editing
before publication of abstracts in the supplement to
Veterinary Dermatology. Authors will be informed
of any editing that affects the scientific content and
interpretation of an abstract and will have an opportunity
to review such editing prior to publication.
|
8. |
Notification of acceptance of abstracts
will be sent to presenting authors in accordance with
the above-mentioned dates. |
Guidelines for Abstract
Submission
1. |
Original Material
Only. Abstracts submitted for any type of presentation
(Supporting Original Study, Free Communication or Poster)
must be unpublished, original material that has not
been previously presented, in part or in complete form,
as an oral presentation or poster at any national or
international veterinary, medical, or scientific meetings,
nor published in a scientific journal or book.
|
2. |
Clinical Case Reports.
Authors are advised that case reports describing only
one animal (rather than a case series) are unlikely
to be selected for oral presentation, but will be welcome
as submissions for the poster session.
|
3. |
Abstracts must be submitted
in English. It is strongly recommended that
authors who are not fluent in English should have their
submissions checked and read for clarity by an individual
who speaks English as a primary language. Free online
translation services generally do not provide acceptable
results. For assistance with English-language editing
online, Blackwell Publishing have a web site ( www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor/
english_language.asp) that provides guidance and
links to web sites offering these services. PLEASE NOTE:
Blackwell Publishing does NOT offer these services themselves
and authors are requested not to contact Blackwell Publishing
in this regard.
|
4. |
Abstract Format. Abstracts must
be typed using 10-point font of regular Times New
Roman and single-line spacing. Do not place hard returns
at the end of each line.
-
Title: Use Bold
letters for the abstract title. The title
should be brief and descriptive.
-
Author Names:
Use CAPITAL LETTERS for the names of all the authors
including their initials and last name. (Example:
A. JONES, P.R. SMITH, S.N.T. McADAM)
-
Affiliations/Addresses:
Use Italics for author affiliations/addresses including
Institution/Company/Practice, City, State/Province
and Country. If the authors are from different institutions,
please list the affiliations in the same order that
the authors are listed. Do NOT use superscripts
to designate specific affiliations. Please click
here
to view examples of correctly formatted author affiliations/addresses.
-
Abstract Content:
Authors are required to enter the abstract content
into the Text Box in which the format has been pre-set.
The body of the abstract should contain the study
objective, a brief statement of methods, statement
of results and conclusions. Results stated in the
abstracts must be complete (though concise) and
final. It is not acceptable to state ¡§results will
be discussed.¡¨ Results presented at the Congress
in oral or poster format must match those presented
in the abstract. Spell out any abbreviation in full
on the first mention, followed by the abbreviation
in parentheses. Symbols that are available for the
authors to insert into the abstract content can
be accessed by clicking on the symbol sign (£[) above
the text box. (please click here
to view the available symbols) Please note that
figures, graphs, tables, illustrations and references
are NOT permitted in the abstract due to space constraints.
|
5. |
Abstract Word Count.
Authors are advised to pay attention to the word count
of the abstract provided by the online system. Abstracts
exceeding the word limits will not be accepted by the
programmeme Committee. The word count includes only the
words in the abstract content and does NOT include the
abstract title, authors, affiliations, disclosures or
funding sources. |
